Five True Crime Docs to Stream

  1. Paradise Lost Trilogy: This is actually three different documentaries (made by the same people), all focused on three young men who were found guilty the murder of three boys. However, there is a lot of questions about their guilt and eventually, they are released from prison. Much of their wrongful conviction had to due with the Satanic Panic occurring at the time mixed with the interrogation of a young teen with a low IQ who gave into the pressure of the police. The first documentary follows the trails while the second showcases the three in jail and the final one focuses on their eventual released and what they had to go through to get it. Watch On: HBO, Amazon Prime
  1. Amanda Knox: I absolutely loved this documentary. I have had a fascination with this case for years, mostly because of the insane theories regarding why Amanda Knox killed Meredith Kercher. I have never really thought she was guilty, but the way she was portrayed in the press and in the court was baffling plus the random accusations of it being a satanic, ritual murder made little sense. I cannot imagine what she has gone through and this documentary showcases her strength and resilience. Watch On: Netlfix
  1. Mommy, Dead and Dearest: This well-made documentary examines the case of DeeDee Blanchard, murdered by her daughter's online boyfriend at the bidding of her daughter, Gypsy Rose. However, it is not so simple since DeeDee abused her daughter and made Gypsy act younger than her age while subjecting her to a litany of medical procedures that were not needed. Although I never agree with murder, I can easily sympathize with Gypsy Rose and can see why she felt this might have been her only escape. Watch On: HBO
  1. The Fear of 13: I have never heard of this one before I found it while browsing on Netflix. It is rather stark, with the majority of the story being told by Nick Yarris, a convicted murderer who spent 23 years on death row. However, although it sounds straight-forward, there are a lot of twists and turns in this case and I found myself on the edge of my seat, trying to figure out what was happening. Watch on: Netflix
  1. Killer Legends: The second documentary made by the pair that did Cropsey, this one examines urban legends and the roots they may have had in real crimes. I like this one because it combines the horror of the urban legends with actual crimes such as evil clowns and John Wayne Gacy as well as some lesser known cases. Watch On: Amazon Prime, Hulu
