Mindhunter and Links to True Crime Stories

Image
So, today I am talking about something a little different. I generally focus on true crime and other non- fictional things related to such. However, in my excitement with a new show coming in October, I wanted to write about Mindhunter. So, I have been making my way through the book by John Douglas, a rather well-known former profiler with the FBI. He has written several books, of which I have read a few, but this one focuses a lot on the creation of the BSU in the FBI as well as how John Douglas ended up in this field. The book is a little older, but that does not detract from the interesting content in anyway. If you haven't already guessed, I do have an interest in serial killers. Not in a they-are-so-cool-way, but in a how-could-someone-do-this-way. Is it nature or nurture? Or some combination of them both? (My theory). What drives someone to commit such horrible acts? There are so many questions I have about serial killers and why they exist, so it is only fitt...

Five True Crime Docs to Stream

Image
Paradise Lost Trilogy: This is actually three different documentaries (made by the same people), all focused on three young men who were found guilty the murder of three boys. However, there is a lot of questions about their guilt and eventually, they are released from prison. Much of their wrongful conviction had to due with the Satanic Panic occurring at the time mixed with the interrogation of a young teen with a low IQ who gave into the pressure of the police. The first documentary follows the trails while the second showcases the three in jail and the final one focuses on their eventual released and what they had to go through to get it. Watch On: HBO, Amazon Prime Amanda Knox: I absolutely loved this documentary. I have had a fascination with this case for years, mostly because of the insane theories regarding why Amanda Knox killed Meredith Kercher. I have never really thought she was guilty, but the way she was portrayed in the press and in the ...

The Torture and Murder of Kelly Anne Bates

Image
I stumbled across the story of Kelly Anne Bates while browsing through my Facebook feed. Due to my interest in true crime, I often have stories pop up about a murder or crime I had not heard of before. After reading through the article, I was shocked at the horrible details of what happened to this beautiful young woman and delved further into the story, surprised and saddened that I had never heard of it before. Kelly was seventeen when her much older boyfriend, James Smith, tortured and murdered her in 1996. The story begins when Kelly is a bright, fourteen year old girl who liked sports, children and was full of hope and dreams. She met James Smith while baby-sitting and he began to exert an influence on her that would change the trajectory of her life. He was much older at the time, already into his forties. She fell for the older man and he groomed her to his desires, convincing her to hide their relationship for two years from her parents. Her mother recall...

True Crime Podcasts Part One

Image
Last Podcast on the Left: A hilarious podcast that often features true crime and serial killers. Ben, Marcus and Henry share tales of the macabre (and sometimes, the weird) while making you laugh. The episodes are crazy well-researched and give you a ton of information, often over 2 or more episodes. They have a heavy hitter series that focuses on serial killers and they are fantastic. Sure, some of the old episodes can be a little rough, but if you like your crime with some humor check out this podcast. Also, just an FYI: they also do supernatural stuff as well as aliens and whatnot. If that is not your cup of tea, they have plenty of murder. However, these crazy ones are often the most hilarious. My Favorite Murder: Another humor/ true crime podcast, this one features two funny females, Georgia and Karen, who each share a murder they find interesting. Sometimes, they tend to go off on tangents, so be aware of that, but each episode features great cases ...

The Waddell Buddhist Temple Shooting

Growing up in Arizona and being a life-long fan of true crime, I was surprised to have just heard of this case. Granted I was about seven when it happened, but still...how did this case, one considered the worst massacre in Arizona history, escape my attention? I recently was binge watching Forensic Files, like you do, and this episode aired, surprising the hell out of me. Of course, it raised my interest in learning more about this case, especially since it happened near my hometown and also, what kind of a person murders Buddhist Monks? Seriously. On August 10, 1991, the bodies of nine people where found in the Wat Promkunaram Buddhist Temple located in Waddell, Arizona. Now, living here my whole life, I still wasn't sure where Waddell was, but a quick search showed me that it is northwest of Phoenix which is really far from where I currently reside. The temple is beautiful, a unique mix of the stucco and desert shades of Arizona and the architecture of Thailand. The...

Introduction

Welcome to Crime Kitten, the meow-ist true crime blog on the web. Maybe. I realize the name is silly, but hey, it wasn't easy coming up with a good name and I do enjoy kittens. And crime. So, if you have not guessed, this blog is all about true crime. Why true crime? Well, I have been fascinated with it my whole life (or as long as I can recall, anyways) and I enjoy reading, writing, talking about it and watching it. I think there is something interesting about trying to understand why. Why would someone kill? Sure, maybe they are evil, maybe it is about money or power or sex...but lots of people want those things and don't resort to murder. I cried when my fish died (as an adult), so for me, I can rarely relate to someone hurting someone else for any reason beyond self-defense. Yeah, I can be a bit morbid in my humor and my interests, but I am not the only one out there who finds true crime compelling. It has often provided me with a conversation topic...
